World champ van der Poel to skip CrossVegas

Due to a knee injury suffered at the Tour de l'Avenir, reigning 'cross world champion Mathieu van der Poel will miss CrossVegas.

The first World Cup cyclocross race of 2015, CrossVegas, will be missing a rainbow jersey when it kicks off the fall season under the lights in Las Vegas Wednesday night. The BKCP Corendon team announced Monday that Mathieu van der Poel, the reigning elite world cyclocross champion, will skip the season opener due to an injury suffered at the Tour de l’Avenir.

According to the team, he initially injured his right knee in a crash. Then, in training, the imbalance caused an overuse injury in his left knee. He is currently on a course of anti-inflammatory medicines, and has rested, off the bike, for five days so far. A trans-Atlantic journey and CrossVegas’ high-speed, grassy course was apparently too much for the injured world champion. His goal now is to be ready for the Neerpelt Grand Prix on September 26 in Belgium.
