Preview: 2015 Tour de France — Stage 5

Arras to Amiens Métropole (189.5km)

Wednesday, July 8 | 7:00 a.m. EST – 11:30 a.m. EST

The first stage entirely in France, stage 5 has a deceptive quality, as it’s not purely destined for the sprinters. No, there aren’t any notable climbs. But if you look closely at the map, you will see that though there are only 70 kilometers between Arras and Amiens, ASO has planned a 189km route between the two cities. The goal was to shift the race in every direction, forcing the riders to remain fully alert. Under these circumstances, it’s not easy to organize a chase behind a breakaway, especially if the weather is bad. In short, this is a stage where ambushes are likely; it is by no means certain that a sprinter will triumph.
