Utrecht to Utrecht, The Netherlands (13.8km)
Saturday, July 4 | 8:00 a.m. EST – 11:35 a.m. EST
Tour organizers had a choice: either they could start with a prologue — by definition, a time trial of less than 8km — or they could map out a proper time trial stage capable of revealing something about the battle ahead. In the end, they chose the second option. In total it is 13.8 kilometers through the city of Utrecht. The course is completely flat and doesn’t offer any dangers, which should favor the brute force of the specialist rouleurs, who will average more than 30 miles per hour. It should prove to be a very open contest. As we learned at Paris-Nice in March, new stars of the discipline are emerging: Michal Kwiatkowski (Etixx-Quick-Step) and Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing) to name a few. But Tony Martin (Etixx-Quick-Step) and Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) should not be forgotten.
