Carlsen, Crowell claim Sea Otter Classic road race victories

Four-day race in Monterey, California wraps up with Sunday's circuit stage

Kirk Carlsen (Predator Carbon Repair) won the men’s overall title in the Sea Otter Classic over the weekend in California.

Carlsen won the 7.8-mile time trial on Saturday to take the race lead, and then safely finished with the field in Sunday’s 37-mile circuit race to preserve his advantage and secure the victory.

Finishing second and 21 seconds back was Justin Rossi (Marc Pro-Strava), while Morgan Schmitt (Jelly Belly Cycling) was 31 seconds behind in third.

The four-day race started with Thursday’s 24-mile criterium in Monterey, California, followed by Friday’s 69-mile stage 2. Cole House (Cash Call Mortgage) won stage 1, Alexander Hagman (Jelly Belly Cycling) triumphed in stage 2, and Daniel Holloway (Team Mikes Bikes) was victorious in Sunday’s finale.

In the women’s race, Jacquelyn Crowell (Exergy Twent16) won the overall title by 43 seconds over Flavia Oliveira (DNA Cycling) and 56 seconds ahead of Jade Wilcoxson (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies).

Wilcoxson won stages 1 (21 miles) and 2 (47 miles) and held the GC lead through the first three stages, but Crowell claimed victory in the 31-mile stage 4 and surged to the victory. Wilcoxson finished 1:03 behind Crowell on the final day.

Alison Tetrick (Exergy) won the stage 3 time trial.
