UCI press release on meeting with AIGCP
Press Release: UCI President meets with AIGCP delegation
The President of the International Cycling Union (UCI), Mr Pat McQuaid, met in Aigle today with a delegation from the Association Internationale des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels (AIGCP – International Association of Professional Cycling Groups) composed of Messrs Harold Knebel, Patrick Lefevre and Bjarne Riis.
The reunion was organised at the request of team representatives and welcomed by the UCI President in line with the UCI’s wish for open dialogue with all of its partners.
The subject of the discussion, which took place in a calm and constructive atmosphere, was the progressive banning of earpieces during road races.
Mr. McQuaid listened to the different arguments put forward by the team representatives and assured them of the UCI’s willingness to take on board their concerns, especially when it comes to riders’ security.
On this specific point, Mr McQuaid accepted that UCI would communicate with organisers and commissaries immediately to ensure the safety aspects are given the highest priority.
After reasserting the UCI’s commitment to studying all measures that could help guarantee riders’ security, the UCI President confirmed that the principle of progressively banning earpieces will go forward as planned but accepted a request from the delegation that the situation will be evaluated on an ongoing basis.
The application of this decision, which was taken after consultation of all concerned parties and in the greater interests of the sport, remains in force according to article 2.2.024 of the UCI Regulations.
Mr McQuaid also emphasised that recent claims made by the AIGCP regarding representation within the cycling family are not at all justified. Two elected members of this association sit on the Professional Cycling Council (PCC), whose mission is to discuss all the problems facing the professional sector, including the above, as well as propose better strategies and procedures to help resolve them.
