Ryan Trebon to leave Kona at season’s end
After seven years racing in Kona colors, former national cyclocross and cross-country champion Ryan Trebon will leave the Washington-based bike company to develop a new team of his own following the 2010-11 cyclocross season.
Trebon, 29, was short on details about the new team, telling VeloNews that he is not ready to disclose names of riders or sponsors that might be involved — only that Kona mechanic and road manager Dusty Labarr, who is married to Luna’s Georgia Gould, will be joining him.
He added that he and Labarr are consulting with sports management groups for help soliciting sponsorships, and that their new program will be an American cyclocross team built with an eye on the 2013 world cyclocross championships, which will be held in the U.S.
Trebon has raced as a professional since 2004. He’s achieved top results on both the mountain bike and cyclocross circuits, including two national ’cross titles, a national cross-country title and four overall wins at the U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross. He stressed that he is leaving his long-time employer on good terms.
“Kona asked me to race with them again next year,” Trebon told VeloNews. “But I told them this is something I really want to do. It’s not like they couldn’t match another offer; I told them they didn’t even need to make me an offer. Sometimes other avenues present themselves, and you have to take them. It’s easy to become complacent, and when you realize that’s happened, you have to make a decision. I have this idea of what I want to do, but I know I’m also taking a big uncertain step into the future.”
Editor’s note: Discovering the redwood forest singletrack in Santa Cruz, California, was the beginning of a lifelong love affair for Neal Rogers and riding bicycles. He moved to Boulder, Colorado, in 2001 to take a three-month editorial internship at VeloNews. He still hasn’t left. In addition to traveling the world covering races, Neal can be found riding his bike in the mountains (during spring and summer), racing cyclocross (fall), and skiing or snowboarding (winter). Year-round he can be found cooking, or attending a concert.
