Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix dawned cold, clear, and dry, which disappointed race photographers who love the drama of nasty conditions. On the other hand, most team mechanics breathed a big sigh of relief as the likelihood of major mechanical malfunctions ratcheted down a few notches. Even so, they and their teams arrived at the start line with an array of special bikes and modifications to suit the stony pavé of northern France.

Fat tubulars, cyclocross bikes, extra handlebar tape, chain catchers, and even a custom road bike or two all made cameo appearances in Compiegne. Here’s a look at the spectrum of technology from the start line this past Sunday.
