DOMINA VACANZE
MIXED MISSIONS If this strong Italian team hadn’t been relegated to
Division 2 status because of fiscal inconsistencies, it would be ranked among
the top 15 Division 1 teams. The organizers’ hope is that Mario Cipollini will
sign off his lengthy career with a stage win or two, but the Lion King’s Giro
crash (and subsequent withdrawal from that race) has put that likelihood on
hold. More likely is that after two top-20 showings at the Giro, third-year Italian
pro Michele Scarponi will make a memorable debut at the Tour. Scarponi, 24,
is more than capable of winning a mountain or semi-mountain stage.
