At just 24 years old, Tejay van Garderen comes to London fresh off his fifth-overall finish at the Tour de France for BMC Racing. Van Garderen is among the young crop of stage race prospects for the United States and makes his Olympics debut.
Van Garderen, who grew up in Montana and Colorado, is the son of a Dutch father and remained off the radar screens for many American fans as he developed in the Rabobank program in the Netherlands. It was there that van Garderen won a stage of the Tour de l’Avenir and finished second in the Flèche du Sud. Van Garderen turned pro in 2010 with HTC-Highroad and quickly ascended to the position of the next hope for the U.S. in the grand tours.
Van Garderen broke through with third overall in the 2010 Critérium du Dauphiné and contended for the top 10 in his grand tour debut, at the Vuelta a España, until faltering in the final week. Since then, he has finished two Tours, led the overall at the USA Pro Challenge in 2011, and finished in the top five at Paris-Nice and the Amgen Tour of California.
Based now in Boulder, Colorado, van Garderen is married to former U.S. elite champion Jessica van Garderen (Phillips).
