Tacx i-Magic Fortius trainer
The i-Magic Fortius trainer from Tacx is billed as a "virtual reality trainer," a claim that may seem overly modest when you witness the stunning capabilities of this amazing device. Hooked up to your PC or projection television, the Fortius can put you in the middle of a virtual reality race that you program, or a ride up the Alpe d'Huez taken with real-life video.
You can also load in training software that analyzes and projects the usual functions, including heart rate and cadence, onto the screen beside the video. The trainer is equipped with a motor brake that simulates climbs and descents in perfect synchronicity with the projected ride. Current videos include Mont Ventoux, the Alpe, the Tour of Flanders, the Passo Gavia and the Iron Horse Classic, among others. If you've got the space for a big screen display, this thing will come to life in your living room with an immediacy you may find addictive.
CycleOps Pro 300 PT
Stationary bikes are generally the unfortunate byproduct of stationary lives; they're tolerable when there's no other way to get out for a ride, and that's about it. The Pro 300 PT is a different beast altogether. Sporting a 48-pound flywheel with a built-in power meter, the 300 PT provides a comprehensive readout on its handlebar display (watts, cadence, speed, ride time, distance, etc.) for accurate training analysis. And since the head unit is equipped with a USB port, you can download your ride and manage your training data with the included software, which, wonder of wonders, is even Macintosh compatible.
The Pro 300 PT specs might sound like a bike you already own: 172.5mm cranks, a 44cm bar, internal cable routing, and a powder-coated frame. About $1700 including all software, or $1300 without power measurement.
PowerTap SL
If you only want to add power measurement to a bike you already own, the vastly improved PowerTap SL could fill the bill. Weight is cut from 575 grams to 410 in the new version, courtesy of a thinner hub shell that sports enormous windows filled with carbon fiber.
The PowerTap SL has an internal torque-measuring device that measures power output 60 times per second, which it relays wirelessly to the handlebar display. The head unit records up to 150 hours of data (power, speed, heart rate, cadence and so on), all of which you're free to download to your PC. Campagnolo and Shimano freehub configurations are available.
Crank Bros. 4ti
Since the Pro 300 PT, like all top bikes, does not ship with pedals, you might equip yours with the new 4ti from Crank Bros., the latest evolution of the Quattro, which in turn is based on the inimitable Egg Beater.
The Quattro 4ti has a small road racing platform and, with its titanium spindle, spring and other internals, slims down to 110 grams per pedal (versus the stainless-spindle Quattro weight of 156 grams). About $400 per pair, with a two-year warranty.
Selle Italia SLC and Signo Gel
You can upgrade your stationary ride — or your real bike, for that matter — with new offerings from Selle Italia, maker of the famous Flite.
The SLC has a carbon base and channel insert and, with a full-grain smooth leather cover, weighs but 190 grams.
The Signo Gel also sports a carbon frame, and rides on a shock absorber system that allows the saddle to rock left and right to accommodate pedaling motions. About 225 grams.
Oval A900
With all that juice lurking in your newly power-trained legs, you will surely want to unleash your mighty wattage on the local time trial course, right?
Okay, maybe not, but in case you do take a stab at it one of these days, the Oval A900 carbon aero bar can help you slice through the atmosphere. With a very narrow frontal area and internal cable routing, the A900 presents a minimalprofile, and with 120 different positioning adjustments (manufacturer's count; we ran out of gas at 37), you ought to be able to find a comfortable position from which to establish your world domination.
