Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colorado)

Men’s Road Race, Time Trial
VeloNews.com coverage of Taylor Phinney >>

Taylor Phinney is no stranger to the big stage or the Olympic Games. At just 22 years old, Phinney is an Olympic veteran, having made his debut in Beijing on the track. The son of 1984 gold medalist Connie Carpenter and prolific U.S. sprinter Davis Phinney, Phinney came to cycling late in high school after growing up a soccer player in the Italy and the States.

Since finding the saddle, Phinney’s rise has been meteoric. He went from a novice junior to world junior time trial champion to world elite individual pursuit champion in a handful of years. Phinney’s palmarès include five world titles, including the 2010 U23 time trial championship, and stage wins across the globe, but 2012 truly has been the Boulder, Colorado-based all-rounders breakthrough.

After suffering through a disappointing neo-pro season with BMC Racing, Phinney came on strong in the spring and became the third American to wear the maglia rosa at the Giro d’Italia when he won the prologue and defended his overall lead for three days.

Phinney won the 2010 national time trial championship and will represent the U.S. in the road race and time trial. His selection to the TT is as much a nod to his previous results as the future that USA Cycling brass see in the 6-foot-6-inch wunderkind.
