2017 Tour de France

STAGE 7: Troyes to Nuits-Saint-Georges

Friday, July 7, 6:20 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. ET

A sprint finish is expected (but not guaranteed) in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the famous Burgundy winemaking town where the Tour will be finishing for the first time. The finale, located at the end of a loop through the vineyards, could suit the talents of the baroudeurs. If the wind and rain happen to play a role, we could even see echelons. This stage could put the leaders under pressure, to the delight of fans.

Stage 7: Kittel wins third sprint by a whisker

In an impossibly close photo finish, Marcel Kittel won Tour de France stage 7 Friday ahead of Edvald Boasson Hagen in Nuits-Saint-George.

“I really had no clue if I won or not,” said Kittel. “On the finish line I just thought, ‘Okay this is gonna be close. So I tried to throw myself three meters longer.'”

Chris Froome (Sky) again finished safely in the peloton to maintain his overall lead.

Top-10 overall

1. Christopher Froome (GBR/Sky) in 28:47:51.
2. Geraint Thomas (GBR/SKY) at 0:12.
3. Fabio Aru (ITA/AST) 0:14.
4. Daniel Martin (EIR/QST) 0:25.
5. Richie Porte (AUS/BMC) 0:39.
6. Simon Yates (GBR/ORI) 0:43.

8. Alberto Contador (ESP/TRE) 0:52.
9. Nairo Quintana (COL/MOV) 0:54.
10. Rafal Majka (POL/BOR) 1:01.

The 213.5km race was the second bunch sprint in as many days. It was also the second win in a row for Quick-Step’s Kittel.

Dimension Data’s Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, however, did well to set up Boasson Hagen for the run to the line. Kittel won by a perfectly timed bike throw at the line. Sunweb’s Michael Matthews sprinted to third place.

After the finish, when he learned he’d narrowly lost the stage, the Norwegian, still out of breath, could only utter one word: “Shit.”

Katusha-Alpecin’s Alexander Kristoff was fourth on stage 7. Before Friday’s stage, he acknowledged that the Quick-Step sprinter is nearly untouchable. “Kittel is the fastest rider in the Tour. We know it for some years now he’s been the fastest,” the Norwegian said. “He must f—k things up a little bit if we’re going to beat him.”

Kittel nearly made a fatal mistake in the final kilometer. He said that in the finale he mistakenly thought there was 200 meters to go, when it was more like 150 meters remaining. Though he launched his sprint later than planned, Kittel managed to collect his 12th career stage win. That tally equals fellow German Erik Zabel’s win record at the Tour.

“It’s an incredible success. I’m really proud of that,” Kittel added. The 29-year-old also claimed the lead in the Tour’s points classification. Green jersey Arnaud Démare (FDJ) could only muster 11th place in stage 7’s rush to the line.

The Tour’s sprinters will take a back seat Saturday in stage 8, a 187.5km race to Station des Rousses with three categorized climbs.
