2017 Tour de France

STAGE 5: Vittel to La Planche des Belles Filles

Wednesday, July 5, 7:20 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. ET

There’s no doubt at all: We should see a new rider in the yellow jersey after this stage. For the third time in six editions, the race is climbing up to La Planche des Belles Filles. This year, just four days after the Grand Départ, this climb could make or break a contender’s chances.

There are two possible scenarios: There will either be a straight fight on the final climb of 5.9 kilometers, which averages 8.5 percent. Or, a battle will ensue on the false flats 50 or 60 kilometers from the finish, in which case it could be chaos in the finale. Either way, it will be decisive.

Initially, the name of the climb, which means “board of the beautfiul girls,” elicited smiles. When it features on the Tour now, La Planche des Belles Filles heralds a dramatic contest. Introduced in 2012 by Tour director Christian Prudhomme, the ski station ascent in the Vosges Haut-Saônoises region has quickly become one of those climbs that you know will play a vital part in how the race unfolds.

The first time it was featured, Team Sky’s work on the approach to the summit produced a selection. Chris Froome handily beat Cadel Evans and Vincenzo Nibali, as well as team leader Bradley Wiggins.

Nibali drew inspiration from that defeat to triumph there himself in 2014 on a rainy day when Alberto Contador abandoned.

PLANCHER-LES-MINES, France (AFP) — Fabio Aru emulated compatriot Vincenzo Nibali in winning stage 5 of the Tour de France on Wednesday. Astana’s Aru won the 160.5km stage that finished on the La Planche des Belles Filles climb, where Nibali won three years ago before going on to claim Tour victory.

“I’ve won at the Giro, at the Vuelta, and this is the first time at the Tour,” said Aru, the Italian national champion. “It feels incredible. We will see about the GC. The legs are feeling good now. It’s so long, so hard, I don’t want to look too far ahead. I had wanted to win the Giro. The Tour is something else.

Reigning champion Chris Froome took over the race lead. “It’s an amazing feeling to be back in yellow. It’s what I’ve worked for all season,” said Sky’s leader. “It feels like a great reward to be in yellow.”

Top-10 overall

1. Christopher Froome (GBR/Sky) at 18:38:59.
2. Geraint Thomas (GBR/SKY) at 0:12.
3. Fabio Aru (ITA/AST) 0:14.
4. Daniel Martin (EIR/QST) 0:25.
5. Richie Porte (AUS/BMC) 0:39.
6. Simon Yates (GBR/ORI) 0:43.

An early breakaway animated the race up until the final climb. Frenchman Thomas Voeckler (Direct Energie), riding in his final Tour, was on the attack. Tour of Flanders champion Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step) was also in the move. Gilbert rode clear of the break with about 15km remaining, but all were caught as BMC Racing and Team Sky ramped up the pace for the Tour’s first GC skirmish.

Aru launched his attack with about 2.4km left and quickly got an advantage on the dwindling group of climbers.

Simon Yates (Orica-Scott) made a move of his own, about 2km from the line. He was snuffed as Froome and Richie Porte (BMC) drove the pace. Soon it was just Porte, Froome, Quick-Step’s Dan Martin, and Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale) in pursuit.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) were both in difficulty. “I didn’t feel so great. The important thing was surviving the day. In the Alps there are stages that I like better,” Contador said.

Froome said he regretted playing tactics when the climb eased, just before the final kick to the line. This allowed Quintana and Contador’s group to nearly rejoin the chase.

However, Porte and Martin both hit out in the finish, and in the end, Froome came home 20 seconds behind the winner, with Porte just behind him. Colombian Quintana struggled and lost 14 seconds to Froome.

“Fabio Aru did a great ride today he’s proving to be quite a contender himself. it’s still a very close race at this point,” Froome added.

Sky’s Geraint Thomas, who started the day 12 seconds clear, dropped to second at 12 seconds behind his team leader.

The top 10 riders are now separated by one minute with all the big guns present, including two-time former winner Contador, now eighth at 52 seconds.

“First of all I’m going to enjoy this moment because I had a great spring and won the Italian title but before that I had a tough time,” said Aru, who had to pull out of May’s Giro due to injury.

“It’s a difficult race and the opposition is very tough. I’d prefer to take it day by day because I didn’t expect to compete at the Tour. My goal was the Giro but unfortunately I was injured.”

Stage 6 will see the sprinters return to the spotlight, despite the absence of Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) and Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) both out of the race Wednesday morning following a controversial crash in stage 5’s finish. Thursday’s race will be 216km from Vesoul to Troyes.
