2017 Tour de France

STAGE 3: Verviers to Longwy

Monday, July 3, 6:25 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. ET

The hills that were so carefully avoided for stage 2 are plentiful on today’s route. This is a beast: more than 200 kilometers, over undulating terrain, with pitches of 10 and 11 percent in the first part of the stage. After leaving Belgium and then passing through Luxembourg, the peloton is bound to be shattered by the time it crosses the French border. The finish, which is located atop the Côte des Religieuses (1.6 kilometers at 5.8 percent) will eliminate the sprinters and a good many rouleurs. There will certainly be splits in the peloton at the finish. Will the yellow jersey change shoulders? It’s very possible.

Stage 3: Sagan wins despite pulling out of pedal

Even though he ejected from his right pedal in the midst of the sprint, Peter Sagan pulled off a stage victory in the Tour de France Monday. Bora-Hansgrohe’s world champion kept his cool, clipped back in and finished the sprint, holding off Michael Matthews in stage 3. The Sunweb Aussie was closing fast and passed Olympic champ Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) in the last 100 meters.

“What is pressure? I don’t know what is it,” Sagan said with a laugh after the finish.

The 1.6km long uphill finish to the stage was tailor-made for Sagan and the world champion didn’t disappoint, proving his power despite his minor problem.

The 50 points for winning also put him into contention to claim the sprinters’ green jersey.

He has won that in each of the last five years, although he had only once before failed to claim the jersey by the third stage.

German Marcel Kittel still has that ahead of Tuesday’s flat fourth stage that will favour pure sprinters.

Sky’s Geraint Thomas kept the yellow jersey. However, BMC’s Richie Porte was sure to test his rivals on the final climb, accelerating up the steep hill to the finish in Longwy, France.

“There were no crashes, which was good, but it was a really hectic final,” said Thomas. “I’m happy to get through unscathed.”

The Welshman’s teammate and reigning champion Chris Froome also finished amongst the front-runners and moved up from sixth to second, still at 12 seconds back.

The 212.5km stage passed through Luxembourg on its way from Belgium to France.

Several breakaway moves animated the day. Notably, Cannondale-Drapac battled to keep the polka-dot climber’s jersey. Taylor Phinney stayed in the bunch, but his teammate Nathan Brown went off the front. Brown collected enough points to lead the classification at the end of the day.

Sprinter Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors) did not factor in the finale, but he managed to keep the green jersey as points classification leader.

The finish climb was 1.6km at 5.8 percent. It was too difficult for pure sprinters like Kittel, winner of stage 2.

The run-in to Longwy was technical and also largely into a headwind. “It was a lot of stress in the peloton,” Sagan added.

BMC went to the front early on the ascent, with GC leader Richie Porte driving the pace. The Australian’s efforts strung out the pack. He was marked closely by Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo), who is also vying for the overall.

Once the race reached the final kilometer, Porte let his teammates take over to set up Van Avermaet.

Sagan opened up the sprint with a few hundred meters left. Unbelievably, the Slovak pulled out of his right pedal in the heat of the moment. It looked like Van Avermaet might have a chance to pass Sagan. But the world champion smoothly reengaged his cleat, fired the afterburners and won his eighth career stage.

“I pulled my feet out from my cleat — that was another mistake. I was like ‘what is happening today?'” Sagan said, after also noting that he went to the front too soon in the sprint.

American Nathan Brown, who was part of the day’s breakaway, took enough points over the day’s five climbs to snatch the polkadot king of the mountains jersey from his compatriot and teammate Taylor Phinney.

There was a six-man breakaway but they were kept to a two-minute lead by an attentive peloton.

The last man standing, France’s Liliane Calmejane, was caught with 10km left and then the punchers’ teams took over pace-setting.

Australian Richie Porte seemed to make a long bid for home with 800m left but soon ran out of steam, at which point Sagan found himself in front.

“It was a strange finale, Richie went hard in the last 700-800 metres. I tried to catch him but when I caught him I saw how much was left, 400 metres,” said Sagan.

“I said ‘no, it’s too much’, so I relaxed a bit before going again.”

Tuesday’s stage 4 should be more favorable for pure sprinters as the 207.5km route to Vittel is largely a flat one.
