After years of serving as a top lieutenant for team leaders on U.S. Postal and CSC, Vande Velde has emerged as a top contender in his own right, finishing the 2008 Tour de France in fifth place, capping out an impressive debut for his new Garmin-Chipotle team. A former pursuiter, Vande Velde is the second member of his family to compete in the Olympics. His father John competed in both the 1968 and ’72 Games.
