Sarah Hammer’s career was a comeback story right from the start. She quit cycling in 2003 after two years at the elite level, but resolved to return after watching the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Two years on, in 2006, she had a UCI World Cup win and an individual pursuit world title to her name. That same year, she founded the American Women’s Track Cycling Fund to encourage and support upcoming female track riders.

Hammer began cycling when she was eight years old, and in 1995 won a junior national title. Since her return, she has won four world titles in the individual pursuit and set the team pursuit world record with Dotsie Bausch and Lauren Tamayo in May of 2010, having set her own individual pursuit world record the previous day.

Hammer is an avid reader, hiker and traveler. She has a hobby for studying geography, and works to maintain a balanced life outside of the velodrome. The London Olympics will be Hammer’s second, after she returned from the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a fifth place in the individual pursuit.
