Palo Alto Bicycles-TIBCO expanding in 2007
Look for Miller and teammate Stacy Marple to return in 2007 with theSilicon Valley-based PABW powered by TIBCO squad. PABW is the acronym forthe Palo Alto Bicycles Women's racing team; TIBCO is a process managementsoftware company.

Six-time Canadian national champion and world championship bronze medalistLinda Jackson, who was recently inducted into the OttawaSports Hall of Fame, will direct the team.

Jackson said she is looking to develop “diamonds in the rough,” similarto recent world time-trial bronze medalist Christine Thorburn, who rodefor the Palo Alto Bicycles Women's team before jumping to Webcor in 2004.

If the 2006 season was any measure, the PABW-TIBCO squad is alreadyshowing success in that department, with two rookie NRC racers taking bigwins. New rider Stacy Marple won the abbreviated Bermuda Grand Prix, andfirst year NRC racer Brooke Miller took stage wins at Mt. Hood, NatureValley, Altoona on the way to taking the sprint jerseys at Nature Valleyand the Women's Prestige Series. Expect the eight-woman national racingteam to make an even greater impact in the 2007 NRC calendar.

With cycling growing in popularity among the Silicon Valley elite, theteam has been able to bring in sponsorship from major tech companies, includingTIBCO Software, LimeLife Inc., Devcon Construction, Fenwick and West, GenomicHealth and Monitor Ventures. In addition to representing these companiesthrough training and racing, the team also participates in sponsor-teamrides throughout the season.

Jackson has commitments from six national-level riders so far, and saidshe will bring on one or two more riders to be named later. As part ofJackson's interest in developing new cycling talent, the team will alsohost a development squad based locally in Silicon Valley. This six-ridersquad will compete regionally and will also integrate with the elite teamfor selected NRC races.

T-Mobile announces 2007 women’s team roster
Although the majority of men’s road teams won’t announce their 2007rosters for weeks — if not months — a significant number of women’s teamshave already gone public with next year’s squads.

The highest-profile team to set their 2007 roster is the German T-Mobilewomen’s squad. Fresh off a successful first full season of internationalcompetition, the T-Mobile women’s team is aiming higher in 2007 with aworld-class roster of eleven riders from six nations. Staying with theteam are Germans Ina-Yoko Teutenberg and Judith Arndt and American KimAnderson, joined by eight new riders, including two-time World Cup overallseries winner Oenone Wood of Australia.

“In their first full international season, the women’s team impressedeverybody with their enthusiasm and dedication, while winning many racesalong the way; they are ideal brand ambassadors for T-Mobile,” said RenéObermann, chief executive officer of T-Mobile International. “Going forward, the women’s program will remain fundamental to our overall cycling sponsorshipand I am delighted that we now have an expanded roster to represent T-Mobilearound the world.”

New management has also been appointed, with Australian Kristy Scrymgeourtaking over as team manager, and compatriot Anna Wilson as team director.Since their appointment, the duo have moved quickly to build on the successof last season, bringing German Petra Rossner on board as team coach andassembling a diverse roster capable of competing and winning across theentire season.

“Our goal is to follow up and expand on the success of the first seasonand we will target all the season’s major races, especially the one-dayraces on the World Cup calendar,” said Scrymgeour, who — like Wilson —is a former Saturn pro. “We have strength, depth and plenty of experiencein the roster, so different athletes will be able to concentrate on theirpeaks to target specific races, where they can count on the support ofa strong and motivated team.”

The magenta team finished the 2006 season in second place on the WorldCup points rankings, while Teutenberg finished second and Arndt fourthin the individual standings. Along the way, Teutenberg sprinted her wayto 15 wins, including two World Cup wins, the first in Australia in Februaryand the second in Rotterdam in September. Arndt contributed with sevenwins, including the World Cup win in Montreal.

Since the start of the 2006 season, the women’s team – like the T-Mobilemen’s team – has been based in Bonn, Germany, and plays an important rolein T-Mobile International’s extensive cycling program.

“Going forward we hope to lead by example and try to promote women’scycling as a whole,” Scrymgeour added. “T-Mobile has given us a very uniqueopportunity in that we have a top women’s team run in conjunction witha very high profile men’s team. This is a fantastic thing for women’s cyclingand I believe it is a step in the right direction for the sport.”

The team recently got together, from October 11-13, in Lugano, Switzerland. The team will be presented to the public during the official T-Mobile teampresentation on January 13, 2007, on Mallorca Island.
