Local Scene: Danielson series blows into Colorado

This is the first of what we hope will become a regular feature on VeloNews.com. There are cyclo-cross races for cross-dressers in California, stage races named after dearly departed canines in Wyoming and a host of other events across America that offer a look into what it's like to race bikes at all levels. You don't necessarily need top pros to make it interesting. In order for the "Local Scene" to succeed, we need your help. If a race in your area deserves notice, drop us a short story, highlighting not only the racing, but some of the local character that makes it unique. Mail your race submissions to webetters@insideinc.com. Complete results in our format (see below) and reasonably sized JPG images are welcome, too. Have fun and make heroes of your local stars.— Editor

The Tom Danielson Junior Cup Series kicked off on Saturday with the Frostbite Time Trial north of Ft. Collins, Colorado. The temperature was a balmy 2 degrees below zero, when wind chill was considered, but 14 juniors braved the elements to race the 12-mile out-and-back course.

The course hasn’t been used for racing in more than a decade but is a regular training ground for Northern Colorado riders.

Winners included Lloyd Sutton (Front Rangers), Junior Men 17-18; Robin and Yannick Eckmann, Junior Men 15-16 and 13-14, respectively; Brittany Rodrique (Recycling Ski & Sport-Giant), the only junior girl to brave the elements; Kyle Berlind, Junior Men 10-12; and Cade Bickmore (Adrenaline Promotions), Junior Men 8-9, who at 9 years old was the day’s youngest rider.

The series is a partnership between the American Cycling Association and Tom Danielson for juniors age 8-18, licensed or not. Points are earned for each race and will be compiled through the last race in Lamar, Colorado, over Labor Day weekend. A $10 membership in ACA gets a junior an entire year of racing, and all of the races in the series are free to kids age 8-18. There will be a substantial overall prize list for those getting into the points at the end of the series.

The next race in the series will be the Koppenburg Classic April 1 in Boulder, Colorado. For more information see www.americancycling.org or www.boulderracing.com.
