EDITOR’S NOTE:

This new special surveys a wide cross-section of road, mountain bike and cyclocross events that can be enjoyed by any cyclist, from beginner to veteran racer. Some are classics you’ve probably heard or read about; others are hidden gems. But all are great opportunities around which you can plan a little adventure.

For decades, VeloNews listed a calendar of races in the back of each magazine. The section was the defining place racers went to map out their seasons. With the advent of the Internet, that information has moved online. But this Guide is a continuation of that original service — connecting you with great cycling events.

Putting this Guide together was a labor of love for the staff, as we all enjoy pinning on numbers ourselves. While the level of competitiveness among us varies, our appreciation for the adventure and camaraderie at events does not.

Over the years, our enjoyment of some races and rides has had little correlation with where our names fell on the results sheet. Traveling in-state or abroad with friends new and old, staying in posh hotels or on sleeping bags on a host’s floor, the great stories generate themselves. The racing itself sometimes is almost secondary. The key is the adventure of something new, and the companionship of friends, teammates or better halves.

The collection of events here is merely the tip of the iceberg. There are great races and rides all over the country. Check out the included regional race map to find hundreds of them through local Web sites.

The goal of this first Race & Ride Guide wasn’t to give you an exhaustive list of every single cycling event on the planet. Instead, our aim is simple: We want you to be fired up to get on your bike. If any one of these events or categories sparks a new interest or rekindles an old one, we’ve succeeded. And more importantly, you’ll have something to look forward to this year.
