The central feature of stage 11 of the 2018 Tour de France from Albertville to La Rosière, the Cormet de Roselend has been the scene of much drama over the years, none more so than in 1996 when treacherous conditions saw race leader Stéphane Heulot abandon in tears just 2 kilometers from the summit. Belgian Johan Bruyneel overshot a tight left-hand bend on the descent (disappearing into a ravine to the gasps of all watching). And the whole world witnessed the seemingly unstoppable Miguel Indurain crack on the final climb to Les Arcs, bringing Big Mig’s dominant reign in the Tour to a dramatic end. However it’s surprising that it has taken until this year for the race to visit the Col du Pré. Naturally if there’s a chance to bag an extra col or two then we’re never going to let that opportunity pass us by.

USA Cycling’s national cyclocross championships delivered plenty of drama and excitement this past weekend. On this week’s episode of The VeloNews Show we break down all of the action from Reno, Nevada.

Stephen Hyde and Jeremy Powers revived their rivalry in the elite men’s race. Katie Compton took her 14th national title in the women’s race. And some young up-and-coming racers turned heads with impressive rides.

One of those riders is Christopher Blevins, who already owns multiple national titles in mountain bike racing. That’s not the only reason we’re impressed with Blevins, however. Blevins is a budding music star, and on this week’s episode, we check out his music video.

Pro cycling is shrinking in 2018 as the WorldTour peloton sheds riders. It’s all because the UCI has changed the number of riders that can participate in the grand tours, one-day races, and small stage races. With fewer riders in the WorldTour, what does this mean for young up-and-coming professionals hoping to make it to cycling’s biggest stage? On today’s The VeloNews Show, we ponder this change.

Plus, we examine this weekend’s USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships in Reno, Nevada. The course has everything you want for a cycloross race: sand, stairs, and even dinosaurs!

Time to explore one of the most underrated climbs in the Pyrénées. Located in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region of south-west France, the Col de Pailhères joins the village of Mijanès in the east to the spa town of Ax-Les-Thermes in the west. Despite being just one of two road passes to top 2,000m in the French Pyrenées (the other being the legendary Col du Tourmalet at 2,115m) the Pailhères was a relative latecomer to the world of professional cycling, appearing for the first time in the Tour de France in 2003. A popular climb for cyclo-tourists crossing the mountains from coast to coast the Pailhères has a certain serenity that only increases the higher you go and, although it may only be 10.4km from Mijanès, with switchback upon switchback and views that’ll leave you in complete awe it’s a far grander climb than it may otherwise have you believe.

The 2018 cycling season is about to kick off, and there are plenty of storylines to follow this season. On this week’s episode of The VeloNews Show, we hit some of the biggest plots to follow throughout the season.

The classics campaign looks to be another showdown between Peter Sagan and Greg Van Avermaet. Will Daniel Oss’s move from BMC to Bora upend the rivalry?

The Giro d’Italia will see Tom Dumoulin try to become the first man in 25 years to defend his title. The Dutchman faces a host of talented challengers, including Chris Froome.

In women’s cycling, Dutch team Boels Dolmans looks to dominate the UCI Women’s WorldTour for the third year in a row. We’re secretly hoping that challengers like Coryn Rivera, Annemiek van Vleuten, and Kasia Niewiadoma steal some victories.

Finally, there’s the Tour de France. Will the most vital moment of this year’s Tour happen on the climbs, the cobblestones, or in a UCI accredited laboratory?

All that and more on this week’s VeloNews Show.

Joining the provinces of Sondrio and Brescia in northern Italy, the Passo del Mortirolo is the Giro d’Italia’s answer to a mischievous and often snow-covered Passo di Gavia. Following a particularly legendary crossing of the Gavia in 1988, race organizers set out to find a suitable lower altitude alternative to take its place. Two years later and the Mortirolo was unleashed on the world for the first time, initially from the village of Edolo in the east. Descending down to Mazzo di Valtellina on a ridiculously steep road barely wider than a goat track saw countless crashes which got race officials thinking once more. Maybe it would be better to race up this way instead!? And that, as they say, is history and the true legend of the Mortirolo was born.

At 1,852m elevation and just shy of 12 kilometers from the official start line, finding your way out of Mazzo and onto the right road up the Mortirolo is a game in itself, often sapping precious energy that you know you’ll need later before you even get going. With little, in the way of views its erratic gradient and multiple ramps up to 20 percent can feel overbearing, throw in a dense forest to add to the suffocation and it’s often as much a mental battle as it is a physical war at times. It was on these very slopes in 1994 that the first glimpses of a young Marco Pantani were revealed, dropping the likes of Indurain, Belli, Bugno, Berzin, Gotti, Tonkov, Chiappucci et al on his way to stage victory. Today on bend 11 a monument to the Italian climber acts as a reminder of triumph and tragedy to a lost talent and troubled soul of cycling. It’s only with three kilometers to go that the gradient dips to a more respectable 10 percent for any length of time, allowing you to savor the moment as the trees finally subside and the summit comes in to view. There are plenty of longer and higher climbs in Europe but when attacked with vengeance the Mortirolo sits alongside the likes of the Monte Zoncolan and Alto de l’Angliru in its rebellious nature and difficulty. It’s for this reason that it is, and always will be, a true legend.

Everyone is talking about the 2018 Tour de France‘s stage 17. It is short at 65 kilometers but has a tremendous amount of climbing — over 3,000 meters. Tour organizers believe this stunningly beautiful backdrop and the summit finish at 2,215m will encourage attacks. Pure climbers should thrive in the rarefied air.

Mike Cotty of the Col Collective went out for a recon ride in October to check the Pyrenean route and ride the lesser-known summit finish, Col de Portet.

Phil Gaimon’s new book “Draft Animals: Living the Pro Cycling Dream (Once in a While)” has been generating lots of buzz in the pro cycling world since it was released. Gaimon pulls no punches in his unvarnished and raw look at pro cycling and is not shy to share his opinions on some of the most controversial topics in the sport. The section of Gaimon’s book that has generated the most controversy involves Fabian Cancellara, who Gaimon believes used a concealed motor to win races during his career.

Of course, the Cancellara reference is just one of Gaimon’s hot takes on cycling. We read the book and have takes of our own. Is it worth reading? Check out this week’s episode of The VeloNews Show.

The 2018 season hasn’t even started and there are already questions about who’s the man of the house at Movistar. Nairo Quintana and Mikel Landa have been trading some passive-aggressive words in the media ahead of team camp. What are they really saying? And, is there any way the two can cohabitate?

Plus, we have critical analysis of Chris Froome’s major sprint victory in the -cough- Tour de France’s Shanghai Criterium. Although the four-time Tour champ couldn’t overcome Marcel Kittel in an arm-wrestling match, he miraculously beat him in a flat sprint finish. Isn’t that a bit odd?
