Biography
Lance Armstrong's road racing career, so far, can be neatly summarized as Lance 1.0, Lance 2.0 and Lance 3.0.Lance 1.0 includes his transition from being a triathlete to one of the young hopes for American road racing, who, when asked if he would be the "next Greg LeMond," responded, "No, I will be the first Lance Armstrong." During that period he won the US professional championships in Philadelphia, and several classics in Europe, stages of the Tour de France and the world road championships in 1993 in Oslo.
Lance 2.0 began when he returned to racing following a harrowing near-death experience with testicular cancer. After a surprising fourth place in the 1998 Vuelta a Espana, he refocused on making himself a stage race, and made history by winning seven consecutive Tours de France, before retiring in 2006.
Lance 3.0 began in the summer of 2008, when Armstrong got bitten by the racing bug again while training for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race in Colorado. He soon decided to relaunch his career at age 37, and set his sights on a different campaign than in his previous hey days. In 2009 he plans to race the Giro d'Italia — which he has never started — as well as the Tour de France. He has said his comeback focus is not just on winning races but on bringing awareness of the need for increased funding to fight cancer.
