Biography

Perhaps the most highly touted amateur rider of his generation, Voeckler has consistently delivered since turning pro in 2001. A native of the Alsace region of France, Voeckler moved to Martinique when he was six after his psychiatrist father and anesthesiologist mother moved to the Caribbean island. His father, however, disappeared on a sea crossing while sailing when he was just 12. Already a cycling fan, the young Voeckler poured his anguish into the bike. He returned to France in his late teens after shining among the amateur ranks, enough so to win the national espoirs award from Velo Magazine in 2001. In 2004, he made himself a national hero while bravely defending the yellow jersey for 10 days in the Tour de France and finished 18th overall. Reputed as one of the cleanest riders in the peloton, Voeckler continues to attack and win races across Europe, but he dreams of winning a stage at the Tour this year.
