Colnago’s C60 has the manners of a race bike, but it’s not meant to be put in harm’s way at office-park crits. It’s too expensive and beautiful for that, with star-shaped lugged carbon tubes—a nod to Colnago’s original steel frames.
Handling is confident and intuitive. The bike is brilliantly stiff out of the saddle, thanks to Colnago’s patented ThreadFit82.5 bottom bracket and the asymmetric seat tube, yet it’s not brutal on broken pavement. That bottom bracket is built into a massive carbon fiber lug that joins the down tube, seat tube, and chain stays. Similarly, Colnago employs a head tube lug that mates to the beautifully shaped tubes.
The C60 comes in three geometries: sloping top tube, traditional, and a tall head tube (endurance) option. We rode the sloping top tube model, in a size 50SL frame with a 54-centimeter top tube. Its 405-millimeter chain stays aren’t outrageously short, but they provide a nice balance between stability and sprightly handling. The 145-millimeter head tube keeps the front end nice and low, which adds to the racey feel. Colnago won’t officially specify its head tube angle, but we bet its right around 73 degrees.
Based on this bike’s great behavior under power and in tight corners, it wasn’t surprising that the C60 produced very good results in our lab. It’s remarkable that a lugged carbon fiber frame can deliver such stiffness in such a light weight package.
Though it is sold as a frameset only, we were a bit disappointed by the Artemis carbon clinchers (made by Colnago) and ho-hum Colnago house-brand handlebar and stem. If you decide to spring for this exorbitant frame/fork combination, know that it needs a great pair of wheels and a capable cockpit to really sing.
