Could the Giro d’Italia start in the United States in 2011? That’s what La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting.

Giro director Angelo Zomegnan was quoted in the Italian sports daily that the race has caught the attention of Washington, D.C., New York City and Philadelphia.

Giro officials are currently in New York to inaugurate a photographic retrospective of 100 years of Giro history. The exhibit is called “From Past to Future,” and features than 100 photographs on exhibit at the Eden Fine Art Gallery, at 437 Madison Avenue.

Zomegnan traveled to New York with other officials from RCS Sport, the holding company of both the Giro and La Gazzetta dello Sport, to begin negotiations with U.S. officials.

If true, it would mark the first time a grand tour has started beyond Europe.

The Tour de France has considered starting in such places as Quebec and Guadaloupe, but ultimately decided that the six-hour time difference, the eight-hour flight and other logistical challenges were too great to overcome.

The 2010 edition of the Giro is slated to begin in Amsterdam. The long transfer down to Italy will provide a good litmus test to see if an even more complicated transfer from the United States to Europe would be feasible.
