Wherry, Small win Iron Horse crits
Chris Wherry (Hotel San Jose) and Carmen Small (Colavita-Sutter Home) won the elite Iron Horse criteriums on Sunday in Durango, Colorado.
It was the third consecutive crit win for Wherry and the second for Small.
A three-man breakaway containing mountain biker Sam Jurekovic (Sho Air-Specialized), Dan Bowman (Kelly Benefits) and Jesse Dekrey formed midway through the hourlong men’s race, on an eight-corner course around downtown Durango.
The peloton held the group on a 20-second leash for two laps before Wherry decided to bridge to the leaders. Matt Shriver also joined a lap later, and the five quickly gained a minute on the peloton.
In the finale, the 2005 USPRO road champion took the sprint ahead of Bowman with Shriver third.
In the 45-minute women’s crit, Small took off with Utah rider Tiffany Pezzulo and worked to build an insurmountable gap. Small said she didn’t like her chances in a sprint with Pezzulo, and attacked her breakaway companion on the backside of the final lap to take the win.
