Julien Absalon (Orbea) has had a carbon crown and steerer for his 32mm stanchioned SID World Cup since late last season and now you can have one too. RockShox has announced that the SID World Cup, its flagship cross-country racing fork, will get an upgrade for 2010. After a two-year absence, RockShox will bring back the carbon crown and steerer for the World Cup model.

The addition of the hollow, one-piece molded carbon crown and steerer drops 110 grams from the 2009 SID World Cup chassis. With carbon on top, RockShox will return to the all magnesium version lower legs, instead of the carbon-reinforced version used last year. All three SID models now share the same lowers. A SRAM spokesman noted that the carbon-reinforced lower legs were too costly and their construction too time consuming for the minimal weight loss they offered, adding that the new crown steerer reaps much greater rewards.

RockShox claims that SID World Cup now weighs just 1400 grams with a full-length steerer tube. It also says the BlackBox carbon design increases steering stiffness significantly. The new steerer was in development more than a year and it passes stringent new CEN test standards.

The 2010 SID World Cup will be available with 80mm or 100mm of travel and come standard with a Pushloc handlebar remote. Its retail price is set at $1120. Look for more RockShox and SRAM XX developments to be reported this week on VeloNews.com.
