Chausson takes aim at speed skiing champs

Anne-Caroline Chausson – the reigning Olympic BMX champion – is taking aim at another landmark: the world speed skiing championships.
The 31-year-old Chausson, who has always been an excellent skier and lived in Andorra for several years, will compete in the “production” category of the competition, which runs January 17-24 at Vars in the French Alps.
According to French wire reports, Chausson will race on traditional ski equipment and could hit speeds nearing 200kph on the renowned Chabrières course at Vars. Competitors in the “elite” category will race with aero helmets, super-long skis and other specialized equipment.
According to the FIS web site, Vars is famous for its speed skiing course, which is 1,220m long, drops 495m and with a maximum slope of 98 percent, with an average grade of 52.5 percent.
Chausson, meanwhile, has remained busy with public appearances. The 16-time world mountain bike champion won one of only seven gold medals claimed by France during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.
