The Cervélo TestTeam adds Marcello Albasini as sport director
The Cervélo TestTeam keeps adding firepower and filling out both its roster and support staff as the squad prepares for its 2009 debut.
The latest addition is the arrival of Marcello Albasini as sport director. The 51-year-old coach, who’s worked with several young budding Swiss pros, including Fabian Cancellara as a junior, is the father of pro cyclist Michael Albasini.
“This is a dream come true,” Albasini said in a team release. “I’m really happy to have the opportunity to develop myself and to work next year together with the Cervélo TestTeam riders.”
Albasini, who worked as a coach for the Swiss national and Olympic teams, will join sports directors Jean-Paul van Poppel and Jens Zemke.
The Canadian bike manufacturer is moving boldly ahead with its ambitious plans to introduce a top-level team for the 2009 season.
The team has already signed such blockbuster names as Carlos Sastre and Thor Hushovd.
Others include Daniel Lloyd, Jeremy Hunt, Roger Hammond and Dan Fleeman of Great Britain; Phillip Deignan of Ireland, Olympic track medalist Hayden Roulston, Andreas Klier of Germany and Serge Pauwels of Belgium, Marcel Wyss of Switzerland, Joaquin Novoa Méndez, Iñigo Cuesta and Xavier Florencio of Spain; and Ignas Konovalovas of Lithuania, Simon Gerrans and Brett Lancaster of Australia, Martin Reimer of Germany, Gabriel Rasch of Norway, Ted King of the United States and Dominique Rollin of Canada.
