Horner out for Vuelta
Astana’s Chris Horner will miss the Vuelta a España later this month after suffering a broken collarbone in a crash at the Tour of Elk Grove on Saturday.
Horner broke his left clavicle in a crash in the final sprint of the second stage of the Illinois stage race and, after crossing the finish line, was transported to a nearby hospital where the break was diagnosed.
The 36-year-old Horner, who earlier finished second in the time trial, was planning to return to Europe this week to participate in the Tour de l’Ain and the Tour de Limousin prior to starting in his third Vuelta a España. Team officials, however, said that with less than four weeks to go till the Vuelta, it will be impossible for him to start in the grand tour.
The team’s Vuelta line-up will be announced in the next few weeks, after team manager Johan Bruyneel follows riders’ progress at this week’s Tour of Burgos and Paris-Corrèze.
