Moninger, Gaggioli triumph at Joe Martin

A new technical criterium at the Joe Martin Stage Race in Fayetteville, Arkansas, proved the undoing of Jelly Belly-PoolGel as the 28th annual stage race concluded on Sunday.

Scott Moninger (Health Net) leapt into first place on general classification after finishing a close second to Garrett Peltonin (Advantage-Endeavor), who won the fourth and final stage.

Health Net sent Chris Wherry and John Lieswyn out to an early lead in the 90-minute race, building a 40-second gap on the main field. Teammate Greg Henderson bridged up as Jelly Belly led a furious chase, decimating the peloton.

About three-quarters into the race, Ivan Dominquez (Health Net) and Karl Menzies (Advantage-Endeavor) bridged to the three leaders, causing further decay in the peloton. Soon Moninger and Peltonin joined them, and Peltonin rode to victory, followed by Moninger in second and Menzies third.

Moninger’s runner-up finish vaulted him into the overall lead, displacing Jelly Belly’s Ben Brooks, who slipped to third behind Menzies.

In the hourlong women’s race, all eyes were on Lynn Gaggioli (Monex), who was bidding to win her fourth consecutive Joe Martin Stage Race. Racing without teammates, Gaggioli placed first in both Friday’s road race and Saturday’s time trial and was sitting first overall going into Sunday’s finale.

About one-third into Sunday’s race on a technical, 1.3-mile loop, Quark sent Audrey Lemieux away and she was able to build a 20-second gap. Shortly thereafter Lisa Vetterlein (Kenda Tire) bridged to Lemieux and the two worked together, holding off the charging field until the sprint for the finish. Lemieux had enough left to take first place followed by Vetterlein. Laura Van Gilder (Quark) finished third.
