Felt Bicycles launched a new aerodynamic road frame under the legs of Garmin-Chipotle rider Martijn Maaskant last week. Maaskant rode the bike to a seventh-place finish in the 210k one-day Dutch Food Classic on Wednesday. Gerolsteiner's Robert Forster won the race.
The new frame, called the AR, was intended to combine the aerodynamics of Felt's time trial and track bikes with the road manners of its road bikes.
Felt's U.S. president, Bill Duehring said the project was a natural progression for its engineers, who have developed several time trial and track bike designs in recent years.
"Knowing the AR will now be a big part of the team’s equipment arsenal is really very exciting, especially going into the Tour de France,” Duehring said.
Design highlights include a deep (but UCI-legal) aero down tube, head tube, chainstays and fork blades, a “wheelwell” seat tube and shielded internal cable routing. The full carbon fiber monocoque design frame is built with Felt’s highest grade of carbon fiber, Ultra Hybrid Carbon (“UHC”).
