Snow forces cancellation of Iron Horse Bicycle Classic
The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has been canceled for only the second time in its 37-year history due to heavy snow in the San Juan Mountains north of Durango.
Race director Gaige Sippy told The Durango Herald that the Colorado State Patrol pulled the plug at 6 a.m. Saturday after five inches of snow fell at Durango Mountain Resort overnight, with a foot of the white stuff burying the finish line in Silverton.
The 47-mile race was first canceled in 1997, just as the leading men’s group made it to the ski resort, then called Purgatory. Reports from the 10,900-foot Molas Pass spoke of white-out conditions with snow, 40-winds and slush more than an inch deep on the road. But today marked the first time the Colorado classic never made it to the start line.
Sunday’s criterium and Monday’s time trial remain on the schedule, and road racers can transfer to one of those events, though space is limited, organizers said.
