This Week in Pro Cycling - December 28, 2007

Published: Dec. 28, 2007

Dear Readers,
Welcome to the latest edition of The Prologue, the weekly summary of news from the world of competitive cycling by your friends at VeloNews.com.

It's been a quiet week in cycling, with most of the sport taking it easy in the days between Christmas and New Year's. One group, of course, that is still racing are professional cyclocrossers, with the World Cup having returned to Belgium on the 26th. [More] Scan the results and you'll see a healthy number of Americans in the field in Hofstade, by the way. Tim Johnson, Ryan Trebon and others are over there getting ready for world's. One name you might notice is that of our own technical editor Matt Pacocha, who is trying his legs in a major international event. Good to see that he's doing something other than checking out bike parts for work. Good luck over there, Matt!

On the domestic front, Neal Rogers reported that Tyler Hamilton has signed with Rock Racing for 2008. [More] It's been a rocky road for Mr. Hamilton since his positive for homologous blood doping three years ago and we wish him well on his return to the professional peloton.

This is also the time of year for the editors at VeloNews to look back over the past season and put out our awards issue. We'll be running a few of the highlights on VeloNews.com, but you'll have to look to the print edition to get the full dose. VeloNews No. 1 is packed with interesting stories as well as the full collection of awards. Like I said, we're running a few of those on-line and we started with the keen observations of our resident crank, Patrick O'Grady, whose annual awards have become something of a fixture around here.

If you go on-line, you can also see that we named Georgia Gould as the North American Woman of the Year and Levi Leipheimer as North American Man of the Year. Check back on Monday to see who our editors named as the International Cyclist of the Year (or go out and pick up a copy of the magazine).

Speaking of checking back, I would encourage you to check our site in the coming days. We have some other surprises in store and some may catch your attention.

Have a good week, be safe out there and try to get some miles in, (assuming you're living someplace warmer than I am).

All the best,

Charles Pelkey
