Grain and Richter take Bermuda TT

The second stage of the CD & P Bermuda Grand Prix took place inSt. George Friday evening with a 700-meter time trial.  Racers sprintedup a cobbled alley before making a hard left and a swooping right intoa steep hill, then doubling back onto the fast finishing straight. Local marine insurance company, XL Capitol, sponsored an open bar and pastabuffet at a café along the course where racers mingled and unwoundafter the race..In the elite women’s event Gina Grain of Victory Brewing set the fastesttime and moved into third overall on the general classification. Grain, who recently won the point’s race at the Canadian national trackchampionships in August, studied the course thoroughly before the race.“I must have ridden the turns at least five times on Wednesday,” shesaid, “I knew them by heart.”Rona’s, Andrea Hanos, a former Midwestern State collegiate rider, tooksecond on the day with Laura Van Gilder of Genesis in Third.  KarenBrems of Webcor finished in seventh to maintain the overall lead.The race to break a minute on the technical course was the main challengein the men’s elite race.  Team Snow Valley rider Ryan DeWald bestedoverall leader Harm Jansen by a tenth of a second to set the early markat 1:00.48.  “I was pedaling so hard I didn’t want to hit my breaksand defeat the purpose,” said DeWald, who prepared for the days event byplaying Frisbee on the beach and riding motor scooters around the island.David Richter (Subway Express) eventually broke the minute barrier,clocking a 58.99 for the win.  His teammate, Remi McMannus, rode a59.86 to take second.Scotland’s Ross Muir of PrestigeVC.com finishing in third.  Muir,an environmental sciences graduate student from London, has a backgroundon the track and is in Bermuda to train for the English National TrackChampionships.The Grand Prix continues Saturday with a 105-kilometer road race forthe men and a 65-kilometer race for the women’s elite field.
