Haywood and JHK take Pan Am gold

Americans Sue Haywood and Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski each scored wins at the Pan American mountain-bike championships in Baños, Ecuador on Sunday.

Competing on a short, but technical course that also included a 1km section of road that meanders through Baños, Haywood (Trek-Volkswagen) grabbed the win ahead of countrywomen Mary McConneloug (Seven), with Alison Dunlap (Luna) settling for third.

This was the first time this year that all three of America’s top women’s Olympic hopefuls had competed against each other. The Pan Am race was also the most valuable thus far in 2004, carrying 125 UCI points for the win, just below a World Cup event.

In the men’s race it was Horgan-Kobelski (RLX Ralph Lauren) outgunning Todd Wells (GT-Hyundai), with Brazilian Marcio Ravelli taking third.

With only top 3 results available at this time, there was no word on how America’s other two male Olympic hopefuls - Adam Craig and Jeremiah Bishop - fared. The U.S. men are battling for two Olympic berths, while the women are contesting one. In the overall Pan Am medal count, the U.S. finished second to host-nation Ecuador, which led 10 to five. Besides elite cross-country races, the event also included a full slate of under-23, junior and gravity events.
