Two familiar names in North American racing – Gord Fraser and GenevieveJeanson -- scored wins Friday at the KB Home circuit race, the second stageof the Pomona Valley Stage race.
Held in one of Southern California's newest planned communities, atthe very end of Southern California's newest freeways (as if it needs both),the stage kicked off under sunny skies and mild breezes (only partiallysmog-filled). With the women's race starting at 1:25 in the afternoon andthe men following at 3:00, competitors raced on a 2.3-mile nearly dead-flatloop around a work-in-progress, the ultra-suburban KB housing neighborhood.
In the women's race, an early break including Saturn's Laura Van Gilderand T-Mobile USA's Katrina Grove stuck for almost an hour into the racewith upwards of a 30-second gap.
Unfortunately, as the pack countered, a tired Van Gilder strayed fromGrove's draft and caught a road pylon in her handlebar. The result wasa violent crash that sent Van Gilder to the hospital (where she was listedin good condition with only scrapes and bruises).
With 25 minutes remaining, the pack consumed the now-solo Grove (whoended up finishing 23rd). In the final four laps, T-Mobile USA tried toform a break, but was unable to pull away from the rapidly attacking pack.It was in the final stretch of the last lap, current CG holder Jeanson(Rona/Esker) began an early sprint which she was able to stick all theway to the finish holding off second place Nicole Freedman.
In the men's race, Prime Alliance's Danny Pate launched an aggressiveattack from the start. That move held for five laps, but was quickly waseventually absorbed and countered by Prime Alliance's Svein Tuft, MikeTillman (Schroeder Iron) and Tyler Farrar (Jelly Belly) with a break oftheir own.
This break proved nearly successful with a time gap on the pack growingto over one minute for a brief period. With the back stretch of the courseheading directly into the moderate breeze of the late afternoon, the packeventually countered the three-man break to set-up for the four remaininglaps.
While race leader Tom Danielson and the rest of his Saturn Team pulled for much of the race, tactics called for them to back-off duringthese final three laps. This left the door open for Fraser and his HealthNet team to pull through and sending their Canadian sprint ace victoriouslyacross the finish line.
