On Monday, USA Cycling announced the 77-racer team that will represent the U.S. at the world mountain bike championships in Vail, Colorado, September 8-16.

Among the cross-country team is two-time Olympian Alison Dunlap (GT), who finished sixth in this year’s overall World Cup standings. Fellow Olympian Ruthie Matthes (Trek-Volkswagen), who just won the national championship, also made this year's squad. Matthes announced her retirement earlier this year, making the world championships the last race of her professional career. Other automatic qualifiers included Susan Haywood (Trek-West Virginia) and Audrey Augustin (Zeal-GT). Haywood recently took home a national title in the women's short-track cross-country, while Augustin returns to the world championship team for her second appearance.

The men's team is led by recently-crowned U.S. cross-country champion Kirk Molday (SunRace-Santa Cruz), who also went as part of last year's team to Spain. Past national collegiate champion Todd Wells (Mongoose-Hyundai) also earned a spot on this year's team.

After scoring success earlier in the year on the national circuit, Wells quit his full-time job at IBM to focus on his racing. Two-time Olympian Tinker Juarez (Volvo-Cannondale) will also be in Vail, several weeks after winning the first-ever national 24-hour solo national championship. Olympian compatriot Travis Brown (Trek-Volkswagen), who has struggled badly this year, is also back for his sixth time.

Juniors Magen Long (Oklahoma City) and Nick Waite (Davis, West Virginia) headline the younger ranks. Waite won this year's junior national cross-country title a week ago in Mount Snow, Vermont.

Like Matthes, Leigh Donovan (Schwinn) will be ending her career after this year's world’s. Already this year Donovan has won the overall NORBA dual slalom title and World Cup dual crown.

Reigning three-time national champion Missy Giove (Global Racing) will join Donovan on the Vail slopes, as well as 2000 world’s bronze medalist Marla Streb (Foes-Azonic), and 2000 junior world champion Kathy Pruitt (Dirt Works). It will be Giove’s last race before packing up and moving to Hawaii.

The men’s downhill squad in headlined by reigning world champion Myles Rockwell (Giant). He’ll be joined by rising star and recently-crowned national champion Todd LeDuc (Foes-Azonic).

Brian Lopes (GT-Fox) tops the dual squad. He just wrapped up his third straight overall World Cup dual title, and will be looking to improve on his silver-medal performance at the 2000 world’s.
