CSC reaffirms sponsorship plans

U.S.-based Computer Sciences Corporation announced Wednesday that, "aftercareful consideration," the company will continue to sponsor the cyclingteam owned and organized by former pro Bjarne Riis. The future of the team was put in doubt last month when Riisadmitted to using EPO and other drugs over a five-year period thatincluded his 1996 Tour de France win. Riis had argued - with apparent success- that his own background might serve the team well in its efforts to controldoping."I don't want the mistakes of my personal past to stand in the way ofthe work we are doing today," Riis said in a May 25th press conference."I did what it took to compete at the highest level back then, and it'sa deep satisfaction for me that those days are long gone and the sporthas moved in the right direction. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't behere today. I have learned from my past - for better and for worse. Theexperience and wisdom I have gained informed my decision to come back tocycling and has energized me to create the best team in the world."Although Riis said his riders supported his decision to come clean, less certain was his sponsor's reaction. On Wednesday, the company declaredsupport for the team's anti-doping effort and reaffirmed its sponsorshipfor at least another season."Needless to say, we are deeply disappointed by Bjarne Riis' recentadmission of past doping," said Henrik Bo Pedersen, the CSC official overseeingthe sponsorship. "While we remain steadfast in our condemnation of doping,we accept Bjarne's apologies and believe that his candor -- and his commitmentto cleaning up the sport -- represents a potential turning point for cycling. We have therefore concluded that we will continue our sponsorship."An important factor in our decision is Team CSC's groundbreaking anti-dopingprogram, which has become a model for clean sports in general. Bjarne hasbeen instrumental in establishing the program, and we believe his continuedleadership in Team CSC and the sport is critical to ongoing efforts toclean up cycling. Indeed, we strongly encourage all of the ProTour teamsto implement anti-doping programs similar to the one in place at Team CSC."
