Americans Georgia Gould (Luna) and Ryan Trebon (Kona) won the short-track cross-country at the National Mountain Bike Series stop at Southridge Park in Fontana, California. The May 4-6 event was the third round of the 2007 NMBS.
Undefeated in 2007 NMBS cross-country races, Gould came into the race facing the toughest challenge from her Luna teammate Katerina Nash, Canadian great Alison Sydor (Rocky Mountain-Haywood) and reigning American cyclo-cross champion Katie Compton (Spike). Compton, winner of the April 14 Sea Otter Classic short track, and Nash, victor at the second NMBS short track in Santa Ynez, California, are the only two women to have beaten Gould in 2007.
A first-lap attack by Sydor drew out a select group containing Nash, Gould, Compton, Willow Koerber (Subaru-Gary Fisher) and Candian Wendy Simms (Kona). But Compton, winner of Maryland’s April 29 Greenbrier Challenge cross-country race, put in an uphill attack on the second lap, drawing out Nash, Gould and Sydor. The attack drained the Spike rider’s legs, however, and she faded to fourth place.
Gould powered away from Sydor and Nash, eventually finishing 13 seconds up on her Luna teammate.
Canadian Geoff Kabush (Maxxis), winner of the previous day’s cross-country, led out the men’s short track, however the Canadian was visibly off of his top form and eventually rode in the pack. American Ross Schnell (Trek-Volkswagen) put in an early attack, pleasing the crowd by jumping the course’s dirt obstacles, which were leftovers from the previous day’s mountain-cross course.
Trebon, the reigning national cyclo-cross champ, waited for the front group to reel Schnell back before launching an attack. He quickly built a 10-second lead and never looked back. While Adam Craig (Giant) and Todd Wells (GT) tried to organize the chase group, Trebon steadily built an insurmountable lead, and crossed the finish line nine seconds up on Wells.
