TWO WORLD CHAMPIONS HEADLINE U.S. ROSTER FOR LOS ANGELES WORLD CUPSeven Southern California Residents to Compete in Third Round of International Track SeriesColorado Springs, Colo. (January 2, 2007)—Two reigning worldchampions highlight the U.S. roster as USA Cycling confirmed today the18 Americans that will compete at the third round of the 2006-07 UCI TrackWorld Cup Classics series at the ADT Event Center in Carson, Calif. January19-21.Current individual pursuit world champion and American record holder,Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif.), will compete for her OUCH Pro Cyclingsquad and reigning time trial world champion on the road, Kristin Armstrong(Boise, Idaho/Team Lipton), will ride for the U.S. National Team. The Southern California edition of the four-race international circuitrepresents the first world cup competition for each rider this season.Hammer became the first American in 11 years to capture an elite worldtitle on the track with a victory at the world championships in Bordeaux,France last April. The Southern California resident is now set toreturn to the track on which she clocked an American record in the women’sthree-kilometer individual pursuit. At the USA Cycling Elite TrackNational Championships in October, Hammer turned in a time of 3 minutes,32.865 seconds to smash the previous national record of 3:36.08 set byRebecca Twigg in 1995. Hammer’s mark was also a personal best and ADT EventCenter track record.Relatively new to the discipline of track cycling, Armstrong has alreadyproven her potential with a bronze medal at the Sydney World Cup last seasonand a bronze medal at the 2005 Pan American Championships – both in theindividual pursuit. The endurance specialist notched the biggestresult of her career just over three months ago when she captured a rainbowjersey in the elite women’s time trial in Salzburg, Austria with a winover two-time defending champion Karen Thurig of Switzerland.Also scheduled to compete in the women’s endurance events is Becky Quinn(Carlsbad, Calif.). Quinn won a pair of silver medals at the 2006Los Angeles World Cup with second-place efforts in both the points raceand scratch race.The four-woman endurance contingent is completed by first-time worldcup competitor Neva Day (Manhattan Beach, Calif.).The women’s sprint squad is led by Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash.). After sweeping the sprint events at the national championships, Reed isthe only American to medal in world cup competition this season with asilver medal in the keirin at the world cup opener in Australia.Joining Reed on the U.S. National Team are first-time world cup competitorsAnna Lang (La Jolla, Calif.) and Liz Reap-Carlson (Jim Thorpe, Pa.).The men’s sprint squad features five riders and is led by 2004 Olympicteammates Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Adam Duvendeck (SantaBarbara, Calif.). The young trio of Michael Blatchford (Cypress,Calif.), Ben Barczewski (Breiginsville, Pa.) and Kevin Selker (Boulder,Colo.) has also been named to the U.S. National Team.The U.S. National Team will also feature three young endurance riders– top finisher at last month’s world cup in Moscow, Tom Zirbel (Boulder,Colo.), Bobby Lea (Taneytown, Md.) and Austin Carroll (Orange, Calif.).Veteran Jame Carney (Macungie, Pa.) will compete under the banner of hisTeam Fuji outfit.Also on the start list, but riding for their Team Slipstream poweredby Chipotle squad, is the duo of Brad Huff (Fair Grove, Mo.) and MichaelCreed (Colorado Springs, Colo.).U.S. TeamWomen
