Cross crusade: Boulder crossers lobbying for access.

Did you ever experience one of those weekends in college when it seemedas though the party never stopped and you try to relive it again the followingweekend, but it just doesn’t seem to meet your heightened expectations?

Well, I think most Colorado ‘cross racers are experiencing withdrawalsince the Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross swept through town, sucked all our energy and excitement, then took it to the Pacific Northwestfor the next round of races. The reason I mention this is because the racerand spectator turn out for last weekend’s local races was dismal. It couldhave been USGP withdrawal, it could have been the conflicting race in Durango,Colorado and it might have been the fact that TIAA-CREF roadie Will Frischkorngot married on Saturday and half of the Elite Men’s field was at the openbar reception. Maybe I should have taken the weekend off too, because Idiggered on a loose corner and got my first case of road rash of the season.Usually I have road rash well before November, so maybe I shouldn’t complain

Even though some of the external energy has died down since the shenanigansof the USGP event, internally things are just heating up. We were luckyenough to have some of Boulder’s City Council members on hand to witnessall the fun and excitement in Boulder a few weeks ago and are now theyare seriously considering a permanent cyclo-cross training and racing courseat a city park!

On Tuesday evening several of us spoke before the City Council to lobbyfor a cyclo-cross riding facility at a city park. It seems as though thecouncil members took our begging and pleading to heart because the nextmorning I received a call from one of the council members and he has requestedthat we get organized and really push for this course.

So, a few of us are working behind the scenes to form an organized cyclo-crosscoalition that will hopefully make this dream a reality. One of the firststeps is to get signatures from Boulder residents that would like to seeor at least wouldn’t mind a cyclo-cross course in one of our city parks.

If you are a Boulder resident please swing by your local bike shop andsign the form I have passed out. The more signatures we get the better,so please make an effort to help the cause.

Speaking of helping the cause, I am working with TIAA-CREF/Clif BarTeam Manager Ben Turner and Heather Clark of Calluna Events to premierethe new cyclo-cross movie, “Transitions 2 ‘Cross the Pond” at the BoulderTheater on Wednesday December 6th. Sam Smith’s new movie chronicles thetrials and tribulations of American crossers as they get christened byBelgian wind, rain and mud. Not to mention the chocolate, waffles, beerand crazy Belgian fans.

Sam was filming in Belgium last year while I was getting my butt kickedaround the course day in and day out. The movie is hilarious and providesan excellent insiders perspective of the beautiful Belgian cyclo-crossculture. Tickets can be purchased on-line at the Boulder Theater website(www.bouldertheater.com)or at Boulder Cycle Sport. All proceeds from the event will be donatedto the American Cycling Association's junior cyclo-cross development programs. We hope to see you all there!

I’m off to Portland and Seattle for the last two big races of the seasonand I’ll be traveling with the TIAA-CREF/Clif Bar crew so I should havesome good stories to tell.

Thanks for reading.
