Bruno-Roy, White win HPCX
Maureen Bruno-Roy (Independent Fabrications) and Matt White (Fiordifrutta) won the HPCX Cyclocross on Sunday at Highland Park in Jamesburg, New Jersey.

The race was round five of the 2006 Verge MAC powered by Hammer Nutrition.

Conditions were slick and slow as warm temperatures lingered throughout most of the day, finally yielding as a steady rain swept in for the marquee event.

In the women’s race, Bruno-Roy took control in the early going, increasing her lead and taking the win as course conditions deteriorated under a steady rain. MAC Series leader Deidre Winfield (Velo Bella-Kona) rode to a convincing second place with teammate Melanie Swartz third.

The conditions grew increasingly sloppy as the men began their battle. White took off early, riding solidly and smoothly off the front, and soloed to a convincing victory with Chris Horner (Specialized) second.

It was a great day for organic jelly as Fiordifrutta took three of the top four spots, with Jamey Driscoll, the top finishing espoir rider third and Michael Cody fourth.

For complete results, see www.BikeReg.com. The Verge MAC Cyclocross Series powered by Hammer Nutrition returns November 18 and 19, for two USAC-sanctioned races in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

Sullivan, Walberg take Veterans Cross
Bradley Sullivan (Trek Bike Store of KC) and Catherine Walberg (Kenda Tire) won the Veterans Cross on Sunday in Leavenworth, Kansas.

The men’s field got off to a fast start with Sullivan, joined by Cow Town teammates Mark Studnicki and Tige Lamb, opening an early gap on a chase group containing Marc Walters (Lincoln Plating), Eric Struckhoff (Free State Racing) and Team X riders Chris Hall, Adam Lang, Tony Stanislav and Andy Chocha.

On lap four, Sullivan picked up the pace and only Studnicki was able to respond. The two traded the lead through the remaining laps until Sullivan was able to open a small gap on the final go-round and cruised to his first cyclocross win. Studnicki held on for second with Lamb third.

In the women’s race, Walberg opened up an early lead and was able to hold off a hard-charging Sydney Brown (Lincoln Plating) for the win. Michelle Jensen (Free States) rode a strong race for third.

King takes Dave Panella Memorial
Ted King (Priority Health) won the Dave Panella Memorial Cyclocross on Sunday at Ely Park in Binghamton, New York.

It was the penultimate race of the 2006 Louis Garneau Central New York Cyclocross Series.

Mike Kumiega (RUUD Racing) took the hole-shot in the men’s race, but King took the reins quickly and never looked back. That’s probably a good thing — because he would have seen Cory Burns (Fiordifrutta) chasing just 20 seconds back for the entire race.

Burns chased his way into second with Matt Dickinson (Placid Planet) third.

Series leader Pierre Roussel (U of R-VC Chaumontais), found himself off the podium for the first time in the series, finishing fourth.

In the women’s race, Anna Barenseld took the victory ahead of Michelle Costello and Susan Atwood.

Sawyer, Fetty win in Georgia
Kim Sawyer (Travel Girl) outkicked teammate Kim Foland to win the fifth race of the Georgia Cross Series Sunday in Marietta, Georgia. Meanwhile, Jacob Fetty (Thebikegame.com) scored a win over series leader Michael Cummings (KHS-Cycleyouth).

The women’s A race was an exciting battle among Travel Girl teammates Sawyer and Foland and Outspokin’s Ellen Carroll. The three stayed together until Sawyer broke free on the second lap with Foland in tow. The teammates worked together to distance the hard-chasing Carroll and then fought out the win with Sawyer taking the glory.

In the men’s A race, Tim Barrett (Myogensis) launched an early attack and Fetty countered to break away from a small group just past midrace. Cummings and three others continued to chase, to no avail. Fetty never let off the gas and won with a comfortable margin.

Hamblen, McCauley triumph at NC championships
Jon Hamblen (Richard Sachs) and Cara McCauley (Cheerwine) won the elite North Carolina cyclo-cross championships on Sunday in Southern Pines.

An early pileup saw Charlie Storm (Inland Construction-BTD) take an early lead. Andy Applegate (Sonic-Kona) was not so lucky —caught in the crash, he raced from the back of the field and eventually settled for the bronze behind Storm. But the winning chase came from Hamblen, the crash instigator, who claimed his second consecutive gold medal.

In the women’s race, the medals went to McCauley, Alicia Hamblen (Richard Sachs) and Lauren Trull (Cheerwine), but the race win went to Kelli Emmet (Ford) from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
