Germans launch antidoping raids

Raids were carried out Wednesday in private houses and offices in Germany and abroad in the framework of a crackdown on doping in cycling, the Bonn prosecutor's office announced.

"In total, 10 private houses and offices were raided in Germany as well as overseas," the office said. "These raids follow the investigation of a complaint lodged in Bonn for fraud after the investigations by Spanish authorities into people suspected of having had access to banned products to improve their performances in cycling."

The German daily Focus reported Wednesday that one raid took place in Scherzingen, Switzerland, the hometown of Jan Ullrich, made jobless after a Spanish doping probe alleged he was involved in the use of illegal substances. The Associated Press said Ullrich's house was among those searched. The recently married Ullrich is on his honeymoon and was not at home during the raid.

Ullrich's manager, Wolfgang Strohband, confirmed that his house and office in Hamburg were searched as part of the raids and said he was considering legal action.

"I was not contacted about it and did not know anything," Strohband told German sports agency SID. "I have contacted my lawyers and they will look at what steps can now be taken."

Ullrich, the 1997 Tour de France winner, was sacked by his T-Mobile team when a Spanish investigation alleged that he was involved in doping. Ullrich is alleged to have been given EPO, steroids and human growth hormones by Madrid-based sports doctor, Eufemiano Fuentes, who investigators charge was the head of a blood-doping operation.

The German rider denies the allegations and claims he does not even know Fuentes.
