Trebon, Nash tops at Mt. Snow short track

Nothing snaps a rider out of a funk better or faster than logging his first ever big win, and doing it with some flair doesn’t hurt either. Ryan Trebon (Kona) nabbed his first NORBA series win with a dominating solo win in the pro men’s Short Track at the Mt. Snow NORBA, Sunday in West Dover, VT. Trebon set off of his ultimately race-winning odyssey with the sort of early-race flyer that often punctuates a short track but seldom leads to anything. Trebon opened a small gap after less than a full lap of the undulating circuit, but by the fourth lap the margin had swelled to over 20 seconds and with 5 minutes left in the 20-minute test the gap back to the chasers was near 30 seconds. With no rider from the chase willing to drag the rest of the group up to Trebon, the lanky cyclo-cross star kept a steady rhythm at the front, his winning margin never threatened as the rest of the pro men foundered in his wake.

“I was definitely hurting out there for awhile,” said Trebon. “But, riding by yourself you don’t have to do all those big accelerations that you do back in the group and I think that was easier for me. It’s about time I won my first big race, but I bet there are easier ways to do it.”

Katerina Nash (Luna) scored her second short track win in as many weeks, outsprinting Willow Koerber (Subaru-Gary Fisher) and Sue Haywood (Trek-VW) in a spirited pro women’s short track. A large group of 11 pro women formed at the front after the opening few laps, but Nash was minus one of her strongest teammate, former Mt. Snow short track winner Jimena Florit who went out with a flat. But the front group also lost the threat of Alison Sydor (Rocky Mountain-Business Objects) as the perennial short track star succumbed to shifting problems.

While the lead herd looked back and forth at each other, none too sure over what was the smart thing to do tactically, Nash’s least well known teammate, Georgia Gould, drilled the pace at the front going into the final lap. Gould’s effort forced a reaction from Haywood and Koerber, setting Nash up perfectly for a final effort in the last half-lap.
