Basso follows Contador to Trek – Segafredo

One year into his retirement from pro racing, two-time Giro d’Italia champ Ivan Basso will continue working in the sport, transitioning to Trek – Segafredo as Team Tinkoff will end this fall. The announcement comes on the heels of Thursday’s news that Alberto Contador will join the American outfit.

A Trek press release said he will assume a consultant position to support the team’s coaching and development staff in collaboration with Mapei Sport. “Over summer we have extended our network of U23 teams that can develop good riders respecting the natural skills and qualities of the youngsters,” said team manager Luca Guercilena.

“Besides our Belgian farm team, EFC-Etixx U23 Cycling Team, the Italian teams GFDD Altopack-Eppela and Viris Vigevano U23 have joined this network as well. I am convinced that Basso will have a major role to play in the support of these young riders.”

Basso first turned professional in 1999 with Riso Scotti, and, after stints with Fassa Bortolo and Team CSC, later rode with Lance Armstrong on the Discovery Channel squad in 2007. He then rode for the Liquigas/Cannondale franchise from 2008-2014 before signing with Tinkoff-Saxo for 2015.

His career was tarnished by a two-year doping ban in 2007 for transfusing his blood with Doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.

The 38-year-old Basso underwent successful surgery in July 2015 after being diagnosed with testicular cancer during the Tour de France. Later that year, in October, he confirmed he would retire from racing.
