Greipel owns all the watts in Flanders break

AJ Johnson, a power analyst at TrainingPeaks, took a look at André Greipel’s impressive power file from Sunday’s Tour of Flanders — 1,637-watt max power, 391-watt 20-minute power average … Ouch!

Normally a bunch sprinter, Greipel has a knack for riding in the breakaway at Tour of Flanders. At the 155-kilometer mark, the German escaped the peloton and set off to catch the two leaders. His initial jump of 1,248 watts was enough to get a gap and break from the group. During his chase, Greipel set his peak 20-minute power of 391 watts while averaging 40.7kph (25.3mph).

On his first trip up the Oude Kwaremont, after 197 kilometers of racing, he set his peak five-minute power, averaging 455 watts, or 5.48W/kg at 86rpm, peaking at 716 watts. Not bad for a guy who weighs around 176 pounds.

Greipel’s final act was on the Koppenberg, where he averaged 501 watts, or 6.03W/kg for 2:22 at 68 rpm, as the peloton caught him and the breakaway.
