Velodrome construction delays Rio test event

Ongoing construction on the Olympic velodrome in Rio de Janeiro has pushed back a planned test event by six weeks, according to insidethegames.biz.

The Aquece Rio International Track Cycling Challenge was scheduled for March 18-20 but will now take place April 29-May 1, Rio 2016 organizers announced Monday, due to construction delays. Organizers claimed the track was 76 percent complete in December, but construction has lagged behind other venues in the Barra de Tijuca Olympic Park.

There will be no impact on the Olympic track events, which begin on August 11, according to Rio 2016.

“Rio 2016 and the International Cycling Union (UCI) look forward to an exciting test event and will continue to work closely together in the preparation and planning for both the test event and the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Rio 2016 said in a statement.

Construction issues abound with just over six months until the opening ceremonies in Rio. Organizers recently cancelled the construction contract for the Olympic Tennis Center, citing “intentional delays.”
