Caja Rural sacks Spanish rider after positive test

Caja Rural – Seguros RGA has dropped newly signed rider Alberto Gallego after the Spaniard popped positive earlier this month.

Spanish media reports say Gallego tested positive for stanozolol, a banned anabolic steroid, on January 3, and Caja Rural officials confirmed he was provisionally suspended. The 25-year-old penned a two-year deal to join Caja Seguros after posting solid results in the amateur ranks and raced pro two seasons with Portuguese outfits.

The team pointed out that Gallego only joined the team two days before the positive test, and said he had not raced any events with the squad this year.

Caja Rural’s full statement:

Caja Rural – Seguros RGA announce that the team has decided to terminate the contract of its rider Alberto Gallego after hearing about the anomalies found in the result of the anti-doping test taken on the 3rd of January 2016. The decision is in accordance with the provisions in the current regulations and in compliance with the internal regulations of the team. The rider joined the team on the 1st of January 2016 and has not participated in any races in the 2016 season.

The team is disappointed by this news as it strives to participate in a clean sport.

Per protocol, Gallego can request a second B-sample test. There was no immediate reaction from Gallego.

On Monday, Gallego retweeted a photo of a team dinner posted by David Arroyo Duran during the Caja Rural winter training camp.
