Nikki Harris wins 1st World Cup at Namur

Nikki Harris (Telenet-Fidea) won the UCI World Cup round at Namur, Belgium, on Sunday.

It was the Briton’s first World Cup victory.

Harris took the fourth round of the series by 10 seconds ahead of Caroline Mani (Raleigh-Clement) and a half-minute over Eva Lechner (Colnago), who moved into the World Cup lead ahead of Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP).

American Katie Compton (Trek Factory Racing) finished fourth at 39 seconds.

“I can hardly believe that I won,” said Harris. “This is my first win of the season and I’m incredibly happy. I immediately felt that it was right. It was a tough race and I counted the laps, but I felt that I could keep going. That I am now third is quite a nice bonus in the standings.”

Lechner now leads the series with 179 points, 15 more than Cant and 39 ahead of Harris.

Cant was on an off day, finishing 14th.

“I don’t know what was wrong, but I really could not follow,” she said. “Everything hurt today.”

The next round of the World Cup series will be December 26 at Heusden-Zolder.
