Henao out of Suisse with suspected broken knee after freak TT recon accident

Team Sky rider Sergio Henao exited the Tour de Suisse with a suspected broken knee after a freak accident on a reconnaissance ride of Friday’s stage 7 time trial.

Colombian cycling media outlet Revista Mundo Ciclistico reported that Henao was hit by a truck while scouting the TT course, and that Henao’s TT bike “was split into three pieces.”

Henao missed several months of the 2014 season while his team examined his blood values, which had registered abnormal; the team attributed the abnormal values to Henao’s high-altitude training in Colombia. The Tour de Suisse was his first race since the Tour of Oman, and Henao was expected to ride in support of defending champion Chris Froome at the Tour de France, starting two weeks from Satutday.

Tinkoff-Saxo owner Oleg Tinkov posted a photo of a Team Sky Pinarello TT bike from the Tour de Suisse with the caption, “Found this on the intersection of TT [Tour] of Swiss, I hope Henao is ok. Dangerous sport.”

On Twitter, Team Sky posted, “Sergio Henao was involved in a training accident and will not compete in today’s TT. He is being assessed by team doctor. Details to follow.”

Sky followed up with a post on the team website: explaining that the Colombian was taken to hospital on Friday morning where x-rays revealed a fractured patella.

Team Sky Doctor, Steve Baynes, said, “Unfortunately Sergio had an accident this morning which resulted in a fractured patella which will require surgery. We will now be looking for the best-possible treatment for Sergio. Of course he is very disappointed but remains upbeat and will now focus on making a full recovery.”

The Team Sky rider had been sitting 15th overall heading into a tough trio of final stages, with a great chance to advance up the general classification.
